Q and A with Christine – Awkward Living Room Layout with a corner fireplace

How to place your furniture in an awkward living room layout with a corner fireplace

How to place your furniture in an awkward living room layout with a corner fireplace

I got a great question from Desha over at a workshop that I did recently live online on How to Decorate like a Pro – the 3 insider secret that will show you how to work with color, fabrics, and more…

It was a great question and I had to share it.

As I am sure a lot of you might be experiencing the same design dilemma with a wonky fireplace placement too many windows and too many openings in the room.

This is what Desha is struggling with:

“My problem is layout in my living room. Lots of windows, two large openings in the room (pocket doors) and awkward focal point (fireplace).”

Unfortunately these are structural element in your home that you can’t change without paying a hefty price for it.

But fear not there is always a solution for any design problem!

Without seeing Desha’s actual space – I am going to assume the following:

– That she has a corner fireplace (awkward)
– She doesn’t have enough wall space in her living room (too many windows and two large pocket doors)

Here are my 5 tips on how to place your furniture in an awkward living room layout with a corner fireplace

Let’s start with the awkward corner fireplace placement:

What seems to be the most obvious focal point, the fireplace,  should sometimes be ignored especially if it’s in a wonky placement like in a corner!

So, my number one tip is to…

1.  Ignore the fireplace

2. Choose a different focal point instead and arrange your seating around this new focal point or  eye candy

3. A new focal point could be a window instead – you can create a vignette of in front of a window

4. Or it could be one of the openings that is in your home as long as the opening leads to something interesting at the end of it.

In Desha’s case since she has pocket doors, she can create a focal point with the pocket doors.

For example, treating the pocket door as a blank canvas and paint something fun on it like the image below.

If you think that’s awkward, we recently moved into a home, one of the main living spaces (highly visible from the front entry) has two interior doorways, a built in desk, sliding patio doors and just to add insult to injury, a corner fireplace! I have a few ideas baaed on how we plan on using the space, but it’s starting to feel hopeless haha.

We have a long living room where the entrance is in front of the fireplace. Don’t know how to solve this with seating. The tv is further down with seating already. I cannot see the fire from couch.

Hi Anna, in that case can you create two seating area in your living room. One seating area facing the tv, and the other one facing the fireplace where you can read a book in front of the fire and enjoy a glass of wine.

Hi there, our majorly awkward layout is this. From the front door there is a small hallway to the left is the garage door, to the right the powder room; walk maybe 5 steps and there are stairs another 3 steps is the living room. On the wall to the right at the end is the corner fireplace, to the right of the fireplace is a wall with one large window with a door to the patio; keep going to the right is the entrance to the kitchen with a wall and a small breakfast bar; so it’s not a full island bar it’s a breakfast bar on half of the wall you can see most of the kitchen and eat in breakfast area from the living area. Through the kitchen is an entrance to the dining room; keep going and there is the entrance back into the living room. This is not a large house. I’m trying to figure out where to place furniture so that the entrance to both the kitchen and dining room aren’t blocked while still having maybe stools at the breakfast bar and having a corner fireplace. Talk about STRESSFUL!! Basically in the living room are two empty walls and one partial one where the breakfast bar is and the wall with the large window and patio door. ANY help you can provide would be awesome. Sorry for the longer post.

Hi Loretta…thank you for reading the post and leaving a comment. Without seeing your floor plan and images of your space…the first thought I had was to float your furniture in the space. Pull the sofa and the chairs away from the wall. Again without knowing what the dimensions are of your sofa and chairs, it could be that you need a smaller sofa and slimmer side chairs to make the space work. Ideally, your sofa should cover about 2/3 of the length of a wall so that there is space left for a side table. If you’d like to send me your floorplan and a couple of images of your space I can take a look and suggest some ideas. Please feel free to email me at info@christinetse.com
